Bro Hoof

What is Bro Hoof

Bro Hoof is a six week course for Year 9 boys developed in partnership with Stuart Keiller, chaplain and youth worker in Tiptree.

We take six lads from Year 9 and work with them for an hour a week for six weeks. The sessions cover a range of topics that help them think differently about life, the media, themselves, relationships and where they are aiming to be in the future.

We knew we were onto a winner at the beginning of the first session when one of the lads said, “Thanks for that. It was really fun.” The end of the course is not the end of things with each group. The lads put together some life goals and are offered mentoring to help them reach those goals.

I’ve recognised my emotions quite a bit more.

Why We Do It

Teenage boys have always struggled a bit with anxiety and expressing self confidence in appropriate ways. A recent survey revealed that 1 in 9 boys are unhappy with their lives overall (The Good Childhood Report 2016) and adolescent boys are more likely than girls to display attention deficit behaviours. Boys find it hard to talk about and express their feelings and when they do struggle they are often reluctant to discuss this or to seek help.

BroHoof isn’t just about teaching some good principles, it’s also about modelling the way a healthy respectful conversation can transform our understanding and our mental health, and about looking to the future in a positive way.
