Mentoring

When young people are going through difficult times in their life or struggling with changes or challenges, a regular meeting with a Pastoral Mentor can be the help they need.

A Pastoral Mentor is an independent non-judgmental adult who is there to listen to, and support, young people as they grow and work through difficult and confusing experiences, relationships, and emotions. Although not counselors, the gift of time to listen, reflect, and encourage change and growth can be a powerful factor in a young person overcoming struggles and growing in confidence.

We work closely with the school or college pastoral support department who are there should we have questions or need to discuss concerns so that the help we offer links into other support for the young person.

Our Pastoral Mentors are recruited, trained, and have a DBS check for working with young people in schools. If you have two hours a week to offer, you might be surprised at the difference you could make.

Students say:

“I feel so much better since meeting … I’m no longer having panic attacks”

“It’s really calming because it feels like easy to talk to. It’s been helpful”

“It’s like a nice time to talk about things and not get judged by it. It was really helpful.”

Adults say:

“It is a huge privilege to come alongside a young person, build rapport and to gain their trust so that I can help them achieve the best for their lives.”

Volunteer Pastoral Mentor

“I particularly value the time and experience CYO volunteers give to our students, they are a neutral adult in school that the young people can build a trusting relationship with over time. I know the young people certainly value the support and interest shown in their lives.”
